Little is known about the Kirin of Japanese mythology, descriptions of the creature vary from source to source, some state that the animal resembles the more traditional image of the unicorn, while others describe the Kirin with more of a dragon like visage.

Legend states that the Kirin had an incredible sense of justice often appearing in courts of law to free wrongly accused prisoners and slay the guilty party. The more dragon like visage of the Kirin is often associated with the Ki-Lin of Chinese mythology, to which is shares its strong sense of right and wrong.
